Doing it right, Pennsylvania Gun Show bans assault weapons.

Courtesy of TPM:

With the debate over gun control raging in Washington, the organizers of a major gun show in Harrisburg, Penn., have banned assault weapons at their February event, Lancaster Online reports.

The organizer of the annual Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg apparently is banning so-called assault weapons from this year's show.

Reed Exhibitions has informed some exhibitors -- including Kinsey's Outdoors in Mount Joy and The Sportsman's Shop in New Holland, representatives of both stores said -- that AR-style rifles and high-capacity ammunition magazines capable of holding 30 rounds or more may not be sold or displayed at the show, scheduled for Feb. 2-10 at the State Farm Show Complex on Cameron Street.

Nice to see that SOME people are getting the message and making changes.

However as you would expect not everybody is so quick to recognize the writing on the wall.

This from Think Progress:

A small Wisconsin town school board will vote Monday night on whether or not to grant the Indianhead Rifle and Pistol Club access to the local elementary school this April for its annual gun show.

Spooner Elementary School has hosted the show without much objection for the last two decades. But less than a month after the mass shooting at Newtown elementary school that claimed the lives of 20 first graders and 7 others, some community members are raising objections to the idea of welcoming hundreds of guns and gun owners into a public elementary school.

Tim Brabec, a member of the club and organizer of their annual gun show, told ThinkProgress that the decision to use the elementary school is one of convenience.

“Who doesn’t have sympathy with the families in [Connecticut]?” said Brabec when asked about whether the visual of a gun show at an elementary school was appropriate so soon after the deadly shooting in Newtown. “But we don’t associate one with the other. We don’t go there for the shock value.”

Shock was but one reaction to the news that the town was considering granting the show permission to use the school. “I do not agree with it at all,” said one commenter online. “I was shocked to hear about it last year, and can’t believe they would even consider it this year after the shooting in CT.”

Personally I find this almost impossible to digest, considering the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, and that the type of weapons used there may be on sale in this place that used to be the very definition of a safe place for children.

In other news today the parents of Newtown, Connecticut announced the organization of violence prevention effort:

Nelba Marquez-Greene put her two children on the school bus on the morning of Dec. 14. Only one came home. Nicole Hockley still finds herself reaching for her son’s hand in parking lots, or expects “him to crawl into my bed for early-morning cuddles before school.”

“It’s so hard to believe he’s gone,” she said.

The grieving mothers and other parents and relatives of victims killed in the Dec. 14 elementary school massacre gathered here at a news conference on Monday to help begin a campaign intended to prevent the kind of bloodshed that has turned this quiet New England community into a national symbol of grief.

In some of their first public statements since the shooting, which killed 20 children and 6 staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the families of 11 of the victims called for a national dialogue on issues of mental health, school safety and what their nonprofit group, called Sandy Hook Promise, described as “gun responsibility.”

You know perhaps the people thinking of holding that gun show in Wisconsin would like to see the autopsy pictures of these poor innocent victims in Connecticut.

Perhaps THAT would provide some context for them so that they could come to understand that these weapons are not simply for show, or target practicing, or making a pansy ass feel like a real man. They are for killing, in a way that tears human bodies into chunks of meat and rips loved one out of the arms of their families forever.

Just a thought.

There were certain things Veronique wanted for Noah’s funeral. She felt that his body had suffered too many indignities already; she was adamant that he not be autopsied. She wanted him to be buried with a Jewish prayer shawl and with a clear stone with a white angel inside — an “angel stone” — in each of his hands. Veronique was only able to put the stone in his right hand because the left was “not altogether there,” she told me, crying for the first time in our interview. She asked the funeral director to put the other one in the left hand spot. “I made him promise and he did.”

Veronique told me that Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy visited her in the funeral home, and she brought him to see Noah’s open casket. I asked her why it was important for her and for the governor to see Noah’s body. “I needed it to have a face for him,” she said. “If there is ever a piece of legislation that comes across his desk, I needed it to be real for him.”

Veronique continued on in this vein for a few minutes. But I still felt that I didn’t understand why she, asa mother, chose to see Noah’s body, so I asked her again: Why, for her? “I owed it to him as his mother, the good, the bad, the ugly,” she said. “It is not up to me to say I am only going to look at you and deal with you when you are alive, that I am going to block out the reality of what you look like when you are dead. And as a little boy, you have to go in the ground. If I am going to shut my eyes to that I am not his mother. I had to bear it. I had to do it.” Several family members also chose to view Noah’s body.

Then, unprompted by me, Veronique described what she saw: “We all saw how beautiful he was. He had thick, shiny hair, beautiful long eyelashes that rested on his cheeks. He looked like he was sleeping. But the reality of it was under the cloth he had covering his mouth there was no mouth left. His jaw was blown away. I just want people to know the ugliness of it so we don’t talk about it abstractly, like these little angels just went to heaven. No. They were butchered. They were brutalized. And that is what haunts me at night.”

After I left Newtown, I couldn’t stop thinking about this part of my conversation with Veronique and I wondered whether or not I should put it in the story. On the one hand, she had made it clear that she wanted the public — or at least, public officials — to have a picture of the damage inflicted on the children’s bodies. But on the other hand, I worried about sharing what seemed to be the most personal, most painful details. Would I be unnecessarily exposing the family? Were these details gratuitously violent? Would I be shocking readers instead of informing them?

The annual gun show that is held at Wasilla High School is actually a fundraiser for the hockey team! Violent weapons sold to raise money for a violet sport, gotta love it!

It really shows how freaking NUTS Americans have become, when you see how many comments are posted everywhere, along the lines of:

"Okay, like, I don't use my assault rifle for hunting, I'll admit. But the Constitution says I have a right to shoot anyone in the government I don't agree with."

Obviously it never dawns on such idiots that the PEOPLE they will shoot, are not jackbooted thugs like in their paranoid fantasies, but more like the son of their best friend, or maybe the daughter of the minister from their church.

Not to even MENTION how the chance of them getting more than a couple shots off, before someone in law enforcement blows their stupid head to smithereens, is is really low.

I don't watch any of the wingnuts on Fox channel, but I'll just BET they have caused dimwitted people across the nation, to imagine and long for, a chance to perform mass murder...convinced they would be doing something "patriotic," instead of what is actually the very worst form of treason against one's country.

I just emailed Reed Exhibitions - the organizers of the gun show in Harrisburg, PA - to praise them for banning assault weapons over 30 rounds and encourage them not to cave in to the gun industry who are in negotiations with their demands. Notice that in the US they are based in Norwalk, CT just about 30 miles south of Newtown where the little kids were gunned down at school.

Oregon Sheriff decides he’ll decide what new national gun regulations do and don’t violate the constitution and won’t permit them to be enforced in his Sheriffdom.

From KVAL TV in Albany, Oregon …

“Politicians are attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims by advocating for laws that would prevent honest, law abiding Americans from possessing certain firearms and ammunition magazines,” Sheriff Tim Mueller wrote in the letter dated January 14, 2013. “Any federal regulation enacted by Congress or by executive order of the President offending the constitutional rights of my citizens shall not be enforced by me or by my deputies, nor will I permit the enforcement of any unconstitutional regulations or orders by federal officers within the borders of Linn County, Oregon.

“In summary, it is the position of this Sheriff that I refuse to participate, or stand idly by, while my citizens are turned into criminals due to the unconstitutional actions of misguided politicians,” Mueller said.

For anyone who isn’t aware of this: federal laws trump state laws when they are in conflict.

Actually, according to the constitution, the rights to make laws belong to the states and the people. The Fed has very narrow and defined authority, which it has overstepped at an increasing rate.

Day by day that appears more so the fact.

They are giving a large number of unhinged people a duty and rite to shoot what they deem fit to be a target or collateral damage.

It will only take some coded messages to start a rumble. Anyone in leadership will be distanced from the deaths and damaged. Some of their craziest will be the only ones who do time.

      Sad times.

I don't get why they need a school for a venue to sell guns. Glorifying or showing consent to gun culture is like saying "We approve". It's a security nightmare, who's to stop a crazy someone from "browsing" and casing the building for security flaws?
We pay taxes for public schools, is this the highest and best use?

      Bordellos renting schools?

That is more or less like how Chuck Palin Jr. did it. Used an elementary school to score some young arse booty for his old Mr. Limpy, that was in need of a pick up.

  11. Convenience. That is their main concern? I think the fact that they don't associate the one with the other, that they don't think it's at all inappropriate to have this show at an elementary school so soon after Sandy Hook is indicative of the problems with the gun culture in this country.

I was watching a special on Highclere Castle, where they film Downton abby. There was a short piece on the gameskeeper whose job it is to cull the deer in order for all of the ecosystem of Highclere to stay in balance. He said that it is essential that he feel remorse, that he regrets the killing of the deer. It needs to be done but he should not feel callous disregard or be insensitive for the taking of a life.

I think that is the very real problem here in the U.S. Our gun culture has no remorse, is insensitive and shows callous disregard. They are arrogant, self-centered and self-absorbed.

I'm not talking about our hunter who are very much like this gameskeeper. The ones that respect their prey and ensure there is no suffering.

I'm talking about the weekend warriors, Rambo wannabees and those wielding Viagra substitutes. The gun nuts. The whackos. The ones that feel they need an arsenal to protect themselves from their own government, no matter how absolutely ridiculous that is. The potential Schaeffer Coxes. They personify a mental illness that seems to be ignored when it comes to registration and licensing. They are desensitized to the the point of an aberration.

I commend the responsible hunters and gun owners of Pennsylvania.

As for Wisconsin. Well, they voted for Scott Walker. Twice.

Well, Id say seeing Jews lined up like sheep at death camps waiting their extermination might have counter the picture you have.

That's what you risk when the government is armed and you aren't.

The National Rifle Association is amping up the political rhetoric in advance of President Obama's gun violence prevention announcement scheduled for Wednesday. On Tuesday, the NRA posted a video on its website accusing the president of being "an elitist hypocrite" because his daughters have armed guards at school. CNN reported Tuesday night that the video "is running on the Sportsman Channel, a cable network focused on outdoors programming such as hunting and fishing."

The NRA has called on Congress to put armed police in every public school in the nation following the Newtown shooting, a move rejected by many teacher groups.

In December, Obama told Meet The Press he was "skeptical" that placing armed guards in schools was "the only answer" to preventing future shootings like the one at the elementary school in Newtown.

"I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem," Obama told MTP. The NRA video seizes on the quote, using it to cast Obama as a hypocrite on guns.

“Are the president’s kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school?" the NRA ad's narration reads. "Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, but he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security."
